Child Health Specialty Clinics (CHSC) is a community-based public health agency that serves Iowa children and youth (from birth through 21 years of age) with special health care needs. CHSC partners with families, communities, service providers, policymakers and other state agencies including the Iowa Department of Human Services, Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa Department of Education. CHSC administers Iowa’s Title V program for children with special health care needs including physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional issues.

Our mission is to make available quality medical and dental care, disease prevention, and health promotion services to anyone. Services include primary and preventative care, immunizations, family planning, women’s health, well child visits, physicals/sports physicals, lab testing, dental care for all ages, preventative healthcare education, prescription assistance program, referrals to specialists, dental examinations & x-rays, dental treatment/fillings/extractions, chronic disease management, emergency treatment for pain/swelling/broken teeth, psychiatric medication management, on-site social worker consultations, individual, family, and couple mental health counseling, crisis intervention, treatment of anxiety disorders including PTSD, integrative behavioral therapy, stress management, treatment of mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder, treatment of chronic psychotic illnesses including schizophrenia, substance abuse and addictions treatment, etc.
Family Foundations is a family support service available to all pregnant women and families with children up to age five in Calhoun, Pocahontas and Webster Counties. This is a free service provided by the Webster County Health Department. Nurses and family support workers can come to your home or an alternate location and provide information on pregnancy, new baby, toddler growth & development, family life skills and help you find available resources based on your family’s needs.
The Family Nutrition Program is a free program for households with children ages 10 and under and is put on by Iowa State University Extension & Outreach – Webster County. The program provides education on nutrition and healthy eating, food budgeting, saving money at the grocery store, hands-on cooking and food tasting, physical activity and free gifts. Graduates receive certificate and color cookbook. Lessons can be provided in the home. This series also satisfies 16 continuing education credit hours to qualifying childcare providers. Available in Webster and Humboldt Counties.
Hawk-i is low cost/no cost health insurance for children. They offer two plans – a medical and dental plan and also a dental only plan. The cost per month is based on the family size and income. There are many services that Hawk-i covers such as doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, well-child check-ups, vaccines/shots, emergencies, surgery, dental care, vision exams, hearing services, mental health & substance abuse care, chiropractic care and speech therapy. This program is managed locally by the Webster County Health Department.
The I-Smile Dental Home Initiative connects Iowa families with preventive dental care and education for their children. As the I-Smile Coordinator for the Webster County Health Department, Angela Halfwassen, RDH, offers dental screenings and preventive fluoride varnish to children and pregnant women enrolled in the WIC and MH programs, as well as pre-schools. She follows up with families after these screenings to be sure they are aware of immediate dental needs. She also assists with setting appointments and helping clients overcome language and transportation barriers.
Proteus provides seasonal farm workers and others with a variety of services that improve their health, education and economic opportunities. Proteus has a food pantry and clothing closet that is open every Monday to the general public.
Rabiner Treatment Center provides a full continuum of services for the youth they serve. Their programming, which includes residential and non-residential care, is geared to meet a wide variety of client needs. Core services include on-campus education; individual, family and group counseling; skill development; vocational training; community volunteerism and community service and restitution. Non-residential programs include an alternative school suspension center, GED, vocational training, placement for children needing a more structured school environment. Their program employs cognitive restructuring and skill development to help youth focus on identifying and changing irresponsible thinking patterns. With a comprehensive continuum of treatment services that support safety, permanency and well-being, their evidence-based cognitive/behavioral approach reinforces pro-social behaviors.
Provides comprehensive pregnancy prevention programs including curriculum based sex education in schools grades 6-12, teen parent support group, youth and parent community awareness events, activities and presentations. Also increases adolescents’ access to family planning services. TIPP is a program managed by the Webster County Health Department.

Our experienced hospice team provides expert care that offers comfort, compassion and dignity for every patient and family. The team consists of the patient’s primary physician, a medical director, nurse, social worker, aide, pharmacist, chaplain, volunteers and others. This team provides service in the patient’s home, including nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The team coordinates to manage pain and symptoms, assist with the emotional, social and spiritual aspects of the end-of-life experience. Hospice provides necessary medications, medical supplies and equipment and educates family and other caregivers. Short term inpatient care or respite care is provided as needed. Bereavement care and counseling is provided to surviving family members and friends.

As a designated regional referral center, Trinity offers you and your family a wide range of primary and secondary care services. Trinity is accredited by DNV Healthcare Inc. and has achieved Pathway to Excellence designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Family Planning Clinic offers quality, confidential health care, including various methods of birth control, STD testing, pregnancy testing, emergency contraceptives, pap test and pelvic exam, reproductive life planning, condoms and referrals. Medical services are provided by a nurse practitioner or doctor trained in family planning health care. Costs for service at WCHD family planning clinics are based on ability to pay, and are often less than at other health centers. There is no income limit for those choosing to access family planning services. Insurance is accepted.
Provides public health programs, home health services, nursing care, health counseling and immunizations and vaccinations. Additional services also include screenings, CPR/First Aid classes, nutrition programs, environmental health services, senior health, adolescent mental health, communicable diseases, maternal health, child health, developmental screenings, Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program and a child care nurse consultant program. Other programs managed by the Webster County Health Department include: Family Foundations, Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa (Hawk-i), I-Smile Dental Health, Prescriptions for Kids, Teen Information Pregnancy Prevention Program (TIPP), Tobacco/Smoking Cessation Program, Webster County Family Planning Clinic and the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program.
Call the Health Department with questions Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. An on-call nurse is also available 24/7 for questions/concerns.
WIC is the nation’s public health nutrition program for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children under 5 years old. WIC is designed to designed to strengthen families by influencing lifetime nutrition and healthy behaviors in a specific high-risk population and provides nutrition counseling and education, breastfeeding promotion and support, checks to buy nutritious foods, immunizations and dental health screenings. This program is managed locally by the Webster County Health Department.
